Urban Bean

| Editor

Urban Bean is a bit of a surprise. Here is a café primarily set up to cater to the nine-to-five crowd at the ground floor of an office building in Woden that consistently delivers great coffee to its loyal customers with the passion usually reserved for more glamorous locales. Originally owned by world barista champ, local hero and ONA brand supremo Sasa Sestic, Urban Bean has been in the hands of Karl Tabaja for the last couple of years, and under his stewardship has maintained its commitment to quality ONA coffee. Of course, all of the expected coffee offerings from the Synesso are handled with great care by the knowledgeable baristas, but this café also does specialty styles such as siphon and cold drip. The fit-out is modern and spacious in a way that one would expect from a café in this mould, making it suitable for an informal business meeting. Food is consistently flavoursome without trying to reinvent the wheel, staying safely in the ‘public servant’s lunch’ mode. Great soups are on offer in cooler months, a display is filled with sandwiches, and hot breakfast and lunch meals along with salads–all chosen from the blackboard–are always good.
