Tasting China

| Editor

Tasting China has took up residence on Bunda Street in the middle of 2016 – in the digs previously home to the relocated Chairman & Yip – and in doing so breathed new life into the well-worn space.

Replacing one colourful and funky looking Asian restaurant with another may seem a little copy-cattish to the uninitiated, but Tasting China is no follower and is doing what its predecessor did not – that is, rejecting fusion or east-meets-west or whatever you may call it in favour of serving up authentic dishes from three distinct culinary regions of China. The cuisines of Guangdong Province, Shanghai and Sichuan are on show here. Unadulterated in flavour but nonetheless plated up with artistic flair and a modern aesthetic in mind. Head Chef Charlie Dong brings with him years of experience in fine dining establishments in China and also a stint in Sydney.

‘The array of dishes at Tasting China are elevated and non-westernised versions of familiar favourites, paying respect to culinary origins…’

From his kitchen comes an array of dishes that succeed in their mission – that is, to be elevated and non-westernised versions of familiar favourites, paying respect to culinary origins. In the dining room, a colourful, cheeky and occasionally humorous collation of authenticated prints by Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang add to the earthy colour palette and furnishings to set a sophisticated and artsy tone. As for wines, the list is substantial and features a selection that will complement authentic Chinese food. It covers Australia (including Canberra district) and New Zealand, and also includes some notable French, Italian and German labels.
