Inner south residents should have had a newsletter pop into their mail boxes this week asking them to answer a survey quizzing them across a range of planning and development issues.
But it’s not the ACT Government asking them to have their say but the Inner South Canberra Community Council, which wants to know what residents think so its advocacy reflects their views, as the Government undertakes the most comprehensive review of the planning system in over a decade.
With a changing demographic and urban renewal in the inner south, the council wants to know what residents value about their local area, suburb or the area generally, and what they would like to see changed, or be protected, to make it a better place to live.
In particular, the council is keen to know what kind of housing they are in and plan to live in five and 10 years from now, and if a house or other building is to go up next door or near them whether they would like to have say and what about.
The new bus network is also exercising the mind of the council, which wants to know how commuters’ experiences have been, including how their door-to-door travel time now compares with that before the April changes.
It also wants to know if residents are happy with the current public transport offering and what would satisfy their needs in the future.
Light rail Stage 2 will travel through various inner south suburbs on its way to Woden but eventually may branch off towards Manuka, Fyshwick and even Queanbeyan.
Council Chair Marea Fatseas said the survey results would be very valuable for when the council develops its action plan for next year.
Initial feedback will be presented at the council’s public forum and Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night (12 November) at Eastlake Football Club from 7 pm with Transport Canberra representatives in attendance, but the survey will stay open until the end of November.
The ISCCC is a volunteer-run association and peak body of inner south residents groups. It aims to improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of inner south Canberra and the community.
Inner south suburbs are Barton, Kingston, Griffith, Forrest, Deakin, Red Hill, Narrabundah, Yarralumla, Oaks Estate, Fyshwick, and Symonston.
