Farmers Daughter

| Editor

Located in the leafy inner-south suburb of Yarralumla, Farmers Daughter caused quite a stir amongst Canberra’s coffee lovers when it opened its doors in 2011, and has been refining its offer ever since, much to the appreciation of its loyal clientele. So much so, that the buzzing little café has doubled in size in recent times, having grown across the small arcade that once housed the usual assortment of suburban retail, and now operates within two separate spaces facing each other, each intimate and cosy. All the good things that make this café a Canberra favourite continue to entice, however, including the great Campos coffee and elegant light meals with an emphasis on fresh quality produce. And of course, bright yellow bentwood chairs and green apples remain, in a sense having morphed into a trademark here. Rustic communal sized tables made of distressed hardwood, table legs made from old Singer sewing machines and heavy cutlery add to the feeling of a charmingly thrown together country setting, while bright and savvy staff bring big city sophistication to the mix. Food is a sophisticated take on country style classics. For breakfast, ‘one pan bacon and eggs’ come with a spicy tomato cassoulet and toasted sourdough, and sweet crepes are served with passionfruit curd, strawberries and toasted coconut ice cream. Lunch may be classic sandwiches such as BLT with dijonnaise on handmade caramelised garlic bread, or a smoked salmon bagel with capers, dill, lemon, red onion and cream cheese. A range of chef ’s specials are ever changing, and salads, burgers, and risotti are also available. A skilled crew of dedicated baristas handles the serious business of coffee making. Commitment to the Campos brand’s ideals of fair trade and sustainable methodologies is high on the list of priorities, while cold drip and single origin Siphon are on offer along with the more traditional espresso lines.
