In the four years or so since opening, Wild Duck has certainly staked its claim on the luxe end of Asian dining at the Kingston Foreshore, and indeed in the capital, making it a favourite haunt of the political class and the Canberra ‘big end of town.’ The rather sober exterior of the modern apartment building that houses Wild Duck gives nothing away, but once inside, the formal entry and the stately looking dining room—plush leather chairs, intricate carved wood panelled windows, elaborate light shades and crisp napery—announce its intentions.

Food is authentic with a modern twist, and an indication of what is happening in the more upmarket establishments across Asia today. The menu is rather succinct for an Asian restaurant, and more in keeping with its status as a fine diner. Delicate flavours and innovative approaches are the pillars of the dining experience here. Expect a classic Shanghai style chicken, pork and ham consommé served with winter bamboo, ham, baby bok-choy and a chicken wanton for entrée; or for mains, a confit of free range duck Maryland topped with a thin layer of taro mash and then crispy fried. The dessert list is short, but certainly no afterthought. A selection of house-made sorbets and fruit ice creams are available, and Banana Split with a Twist includes bitter chocolate glaze, lotus seeds on rum and almond crumble and raspberry sorbet.
