Wheat & Oats

| Editor

Located amidst car dealers, mechanics and various utilitarian enterprises, Wheat & Oats is the latest café to set up shop in the rather gritty surrounds of Phillip’s industrial precinct. Joining long time operator Hansel & Gretel and the more recent Lava Espresso, their choice of location may well be confirmation that coffee culture has found a new home to thrive in. Wheat & Oats is run by the same people that own the quirky subterranean Nepalese restaurant Hungry Buddha in Curtin, so it’s no surprise that they have chosen to get their coffee from their neighbours at the highly regarded Red Brick Espresso. Not only is this a quality product but is also local; and local is a big deal at Wheat & Oats. They are trying to source as much of their produce locally, both in their prepared meals and for retail consumption. The large space is decked with shelves displaying a number of local specialty food items such as olive oil, condiments, muesli, chocolates, jams and seasonings. The kitchen serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and whilst not vegetarian, offers a very good range for those that wish to abstain from meat. Typically, breakfast may include sweeter options such as Canberra handmade muesli with natural yoghurt and fruit or ‘Sweet Bones’ banana bread with passionfruit butter, or heartier savoury egg based dishes. Home baked eggs come with organic beans, tomato, honey, cumin and parmesan, a kale omelette comes with garlic, Spanish onion and ham, and a breakfast wrap is filled with fried egg, organic beans, feta and spinach. For lunch, a range of pressed toasties come with a range of fillings that go well beyond ham & cheese, a lamb rogan josh is warming, as are ramen noodles with bok-choy, coriander and poached egg. On weekdays, the place is usually buzzing with local office workers and car dealers; and on weekends, a sunny, earthy, thrown-together outdoor area at the rear is utilised for the ever growing brunch crowd.
