A trip to the local produce markets is perhaps not on everybody’s agenda when visiting another city, but for those that may be determined to make the most of their stay in one of the many serviced apartments in the capital, it is certainly a far better proposition than trudging down to participate in the dreary sameness of the major supermarkets. Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets are surprisingly close to many of the inner south’s apartment complexes, and well worth the one or two kilometre trip to shop like a local. Here you will find Bean & Grain, a bakery and café that offers freshly baked, hand made and genuine sourdoughs, rye, spelt, lin-soy and gluten free loaves to take home; along with a quality breakfast and lunch offering for those that may want to recharge and take in the market atmosphere. Typically breakfast may be as simple as toast or a bagel with house made spreads and jams, or a full blown ‘Bean & Grain Breakfast’ consisting of eggs in any style market sausage, bacon, fried tomatoes, mushrooms and house made potato rosti, served on fresh baked sourdough or bagel, of course. Speaking of bagels, they are a specialty here, and may be ordered with classic fillings such as roast beef, horseradish, salmon and cream cheese, and bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato. Lunch is served between noon and 3pm, and gets quite hearty. Expect lamb shanks braised in a rich red wine and tomato sauce, served in a rosemary, sea salt sourdough baguette with caramelised onion, jus and shaved parmesan, or a ploughman’s platter with prosciutto, house cured salmon, cured beef, house made Persian fetta, capsicum relish and chilli jam. For sweet tooths, display is crammed with cakes, slices and seasonal fruit-tarts. Apple, apricot and walnut Danishes are always tempting, as are chocolate or almond croissants. Coffee is a serious affair as well, with beans supplied by highly regarded locals Lonsdale Street Roasters, it is expertly poured by skilled baristas.
