Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor and artistic director Dr Nicholas Milton has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category for his work with German concert pianist Joseph Moog.
The nomination is a result of a collaboration between Moog, Milton, and the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie and their production of the album, Grieg and Moszkowski: Piano Concertos, released in July 2015 through Onyx Records.
The Sydney-born conductor says that he was shocked and delighted to receive the nomination.“Joseph Moog and I have done a couple of recordings together and we’ve got a couple in the pipeline, and he’s a magnificent pianist and we’ve worked well together for a long time,” he says. “From the very first time we worked together we had a mutual understanding of the music. We feel the same way about the tempo, the timing, the transitions, and the emotion of the music, and it’s that very good musical understanding between the two of us and that’s resulted in some very good recordings.”
“I feel the same way about working with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. There’s a very special connection with the orchestra and I think you can’t really make music properly unless you have got this understanding. That’s something that audiences recognise too, which is why we’re consistently selling out concerts.”
Dr Milton says the orchestra is playing at a superb level. “I come to a rehearsal thinking this is a tricky program, but I come away euphoric–it’s very special, and that’s the same kind of connection I feel with this pianist; a real connection.”
He is yet unsure if he’ll be attending the ceremony in Los Angeles. “I haven’t quite worked out my itinerary so haven’t decided if I’ll be attending the reception. I’ll be in Canberra immediately prior to the awards, so it may be possible.”
Dr Milton is currently conducting Don Giovanni in Saarländisches Staatstheater with the Saarländisches Staatsorchester. CSO CEO Mr Henry Laska says that the conductor is to be applauded for his work on Joseph Moog’s stunning album Grieg and Moszkowski: Piano Concertos. “The magic that he has created on this album is something we’ve been lucky enough to witness him do live on stage many times with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. We hope he’ll be able to attend the awards night be called up to receive the award. Who knows, we might even spot him hanging out with Taylor Swift.”
