To help you find a scoop of the good stuff over summer in Canberra, Region Media has compiled a list of the city’s ice cream parlours big on seasonal flavours and homemade treats.
Stripey Sundae
In a little weatherboard cottage in Gold Creek, Stripey Sundae is serving up doses of nostalgia in a cone. With a charming interior of striped blue walls and colourful bunting, white tables and chairs are set up for those who want to linger playing board games from the store’s massive library. Or take a seat on the veranda outside and enjoy the cooling mist sprayers on a hot day.
There is a changing daily blackboard menu of 18 homemade dairy and vegan ice creams. Options range from the traditional flavours of chocolate and vanilla to raspberry sorbet, soy-based liquorice and a coconut-based chai.
Stripey Sundae is located at 11 O’Hanlon Place, Nicholls and is open seven days a week over summer from noon.
Spilt Milk Bar
Recently opening their first Canberra store in Dickson, Spilt Milk Gelato Bar combines a fresh, wholesome party-like atmosphere in their store with their handmade icy desserts. Expect big, bold flavours and lively tunes pumping out of the speakers when visiting.
Spilt Milk works closely with local producers and farmers to source the best ingredients to produce innovative seasonal gelato flavours fresh every day onsite in a process they call ‘cow to cone’. It’s working – Canberrans queue at their doors daily.
Expect to see a weekly rotating menu of flavours that currently include pistachio, hazelnut, and their signature Spilt Milk flavour, a plain milk gelato.
Spilt Milk Bar is located at Unit 70/2 Cape St, Dickson and is open Monday to Friday from 2:00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm.
Frugii Dessert Laboratory
Canberra’s own Willy Wonka of sweet treats, Frugii Dessert Laboratory is well known and loved by locals and visitors alike for their handmade creations. Located in the Ori building in Lonsdale Street, Braddon, experimental unique flavours feature regularly.
With the ice cream, gelato and sorbet displays changing several times a day, variety and innovation are always on the menu. Look out for the popular durian ice cream sticks sitting alongside Coco Pops gelato, bacon ice cream and perennial favourites of dark chocolate, vanilla bean and salted caramel.
Frugii Dessert Laboratory is located on the ground floor of the Ori building, 28-30 Lonsdale St, Braddon and is open seven days a week from noon.
