The opening week of the Sunset Cinema, which took place in the Australian Botanic Gardens in late November, may have been largely rained out. But with a season in full swing until 22 February, there’s a whole lot more yet to happen at the big screen on the hill.
Launched by owner Simon Rollin in 2010 and hosting its first season in Canberra in 2014, the outdoor cinema is now in its 10th year in Canberra. Having grown to a substantial event, the Sunset Cinema operates across four states for five months of the year.
The outdoor movie experience that Sunset Cinema delivers has been well honed over the past decade. Kicking off in the late afternoon, it sees guests plop into a bean bag and wait for the sun to go down and the cinema to light up.
To ensure guests are well fed and hydrated for the summer afternoon, not only are all your favourite cinema snacks on offer, as well as a Fever Tree gin bar, but a selection of Canberra food trucks is also invited.
This year, the primary food vendor for the Sunset Cinema is Soom Soom Street Kitchen, which will attend all sessions, which run from Wednesday to Saturday each week. Run by former XO chef Chun Yi Liao, the Soom Soom truck, which normally specialises in the Taiwanese street food scallion pancakes, has made a custom menu for the cinema season.
“We are doing late-night movie-style snacks,” Chun said. ”I’ve made a range of tacos with Asian-inspired flavours especially for the event. We have lemongrass chicken and a spicy pork taco, plus a vegetarian taco. We’re also doing a Sloppy Joe burger.”
Chun was disappointed that the first week of the cinema season was rained out but is looking forward to dishing up her flavour-packed street food throughout the summer.
Joining Soom Soom at a range of sessions will be Canberra’s well-known and loved Tikka Stand. Operating since 2015, Tikka Stand serves up Indian barbecue chicken tikka in a range of forms, including on rolls, wraps and mixed plates. Perfect for summer, Tikka Stand also does a traditional mango lassi, which is an Indian smoothie made with yoghurt, mango and spices.
To round out the trio of local food trucks, Belconnen-based BZ Burgers will be making appearances with its range of specialty burgers and fries. Associated with Benz On Miller, a Brisbane burger cafe voted as having Brisbane’s best burger in 2020, BZ Burgers’ American-style fare will hit the spot for a movie night.
Many larger-scale events that come to the Canberra region sacrifice space for local food trucks to accommodate their in-house vendors that travel with the event. With all three primary food vendors being from Canberra, this is a great opportunity to support an event that is giving opportunities to local businesses and to also enjoy a deliciously diverse food experience to accompany a night at the movies.
