A one-of-a-kind community event is set to hit the banks of Queanbeyan River next month.

Bookings are now open for the annual Music by the River event, this year, aptly titled, ‘The Rocket Man’.

The free live music performance is presented by Icon Water, Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO).

The first performance of the year for the CSO, this year’s production centres on one of Australia’s most accomplished vocalists, gold record seller, talented musician and songwriter Darren Percival as he delivers Elton John classics, including ultimate crowd-pleaser ‘Rocket Man’.

Billed as “a family-friendly evening under the stars”, the evening is one of the CSO’s most highly anticipated annual performances.

“We can’t wait to return to the banks of the Queanbeyan River for our annual concert under the stars – our opening performance for 2023,” CSO Concertmaster Kirsten Williams said.

“This will be a memorable, uplifting experience for the whole community.”

The evening also offers the chance to enjoy local wines and tasty food van favourites, or attendees can bring along a picnic.

Loads of pre-entertainment kicks off at 3 pm, including performances from Canberra Harmony Chorus, Duralla Street Dudes, Woodface and more.

The CSO performance commences at 7 pm.

Now in its seventh year, the annual Music by the River is made possible through the support of sponsors like Icon Water.

Icon Water general manager Davina McCormick said the event was a highlight at the start of the region’s calendar, bringing people back together after the festive season.

“Music by the River is such a great night – it allows us to connect people from all across the broader region,” she said.

“For Icon Water, it’s also about celebrating our long history, closing in on 100 years of providing water to the Queanbeyan community.”

Ms McCormick said this year’s event upped the ante.

“This is the seventh year that the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council and Icon Water have supported this popular event – and having Darren Percival, a star from the inaugural season of The Voice, heading a massive 30-piece outdoor orchestra makes it the most ambitious one yet,” she said.

“The event just seems to be growing in popularity, and we are so proud that we can come together with our neighbours to put on an event that will draw in fans around the region.”

The night is touted as a wonderful opportunity to bring together music lovers, those being introduced to the joy of live music for the first time and those wanting to soak up the atmosphere.

Music by the River runs from 3 pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday, 4 February, at Queen Elizabeth II Park, 55 Collett Street, Queanbeyan.

Though entry is free, spaces are limited and expected to book out quickly.

All attendees should pre-register their interest and book tickets via Eventbrite soon to avoid disappointment.
