Parlour Wine Room is fittingly located at the heritage listed NewActon Pavilion, a beautifully refurbished building which houses the boutique Peppers Hotel and other cafés, restaurants and bars.
The original building that houses Parlour Wine Room was opened in 1927 and is typical of the early Canberra architectural style, making it a perfect match for the art deco /old world ambience at Parlour. The beautifully cluttered space looks in part more like a lounge room than a restaurant. Tucked away corners filled with comfy sofas and carved timber chairs compete with traditional dining settings scattered about. Bar patrons at Parlour Wine Room can keep things simple with a tapas-style bar plate and a cocktail. Typical are serrano ham and gruyere croquettes, or white anchovy, braised peppers and capers on toast. The dining room menu may best be described as modern European with the occasional French touch: Starters may be steak tartare with croutons, egg yolk & baby parsley or a pork and pistachio terrine with pickled vegetables and toast. For mains, kingfish comes with scallops, caramelized fennel & haricot beans; slow cooked pork belly with Jerusalem artichokes, capers, raisins & red wine jus. For lunch, burgers, pasta and salads keep things way more casual. As for wine, the seriously accomplished list takes in Canberra locals, great Aussies and a broad selection of from Europe and the Americas, or you could just turn it into a cocktail evening with one of their interesting list of originals or your favourite classic.
