Since opening in November 2020, SuperSweet Pastry quickly filled a delicious sugary void at Isaacs shops. The suburb had long been lacking a vibrant local retail district. The infrastructure was there, but the shops mainly lay vacant aside from a handful of successful accounting offices.
That quickly changed when the café put out its welcome mat for the first time. Along with serving up cups of coffee and small-batch cakes, the shopfront has also been responsible for breathing new life into the area.
The car park is full on weekend mornings. Locals are lined up in their lycra, fresh from making use of the nearby beautiful cycling and walking trails. Tables are filled with people eating the pretty and delicate signature Mille Crêpe Cakes.
Living nearby myself, I have indulged many a time in the desserts on offer. My favourites are the refreshing watermelon cake, silky cheesecake and chewy brownie cookie. And now there are new favourites to rotate through as they have added a savoury selection to further tempt tastebuds.
Since their opening, residents have embraced their new local café but with a persistent request to add breakfast and lunch options. Wanting to maintain the high calibre quality they have become known for, they took their time selecting the right chef that was up to the job.
With the chef now onboard, hot breakfast and lunch items have filled out the menu with the dishes from the back of the kitchen matching the playfulness and vibrancy of the dessert cabinet out the front.
There are staples of eggs, bacon, toast and burgers along with specialty house brunch options. But for my first taste test of the new fare, I dived into the Rainbow Fritter.
The fritters are perfectly golden fried crunchy balls filled with zucchini, carrot and pumpkin, all in all, making you feel quite virtuous for fitting all those vegetables into your breakfast meal. They sit proudly on smooth avocado puree and are topped with scrambled chilli eggs. The eggs are a sight to behold and a pleasure to eat. Looking like a super fluffy souffle, they are the best eggs I have had for breakfast, they were light and fun to eat.
With the addition of the new hot menu, the simple pleasure of a visit to the local shops has just gotten even better in Isaacs.
SuperSweet Pastry is located at shop 3/6 Farr Place, Isaacs, and is open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
