There are few things more tempting than staying under the doona on weekends when the temperatures are arctic, but the people behind Haig Park Village Markets have a cunning ploy to get Canberrans out into the bracing winter air.
It involves the winning combination of hot cider from BentSpoke Brewery, mulled wine from Canberra Distillery, fire pits, live music, roving entertainment and tasty winter treats from popular Wildflour bakery, Junee Liquorice and Chocolate, Latino Catering and more.
Two Winter Wonderland-themed markets will be held from 9am to 2pm on Sundays August 1 and 8. During the events, a mulled wine and cider garden with open fire will allow market visitors to cosy up with something to eat and drink while watching local musicians perform. Kids can set their sights on the roving magician and juggler. An African drumming and dance experience and festive workshops will round out the entertainment.
“Through our Winter Wonderland markets, we want to provide the opportunity for Canberrans to come out during the cooler months to enjoy a fun and exciting free activity, and in doing so support our small businesses, farmers and producers,” says market director Alexandra Webb.
“It has been very challenging for everyone during these COVID times, but we really want to thank the public for continuing to support the markets and doing their best to comply with the most current directives.
“Haig Park Village Markets have always strived to go beyond the minimum requirements to ensure the safety of everyone attending, and together we will continue to be able to offer amazing produce and products directly to the community.”
New stallholders at the two themed markets include Baiyun Scarves, StreeTruck Mexican street food, Canberra Succulents, FocusFolding and SouthGround jewellery, Sassy Dragon Art, Missy Minzy and My Sweet Lady. They will join the existing line-up of sellers of baked goods, organic produce, wine, fruit and veg, meat and cheese.
Other first-timers – Wildflour, Happy B Honey and Latino Catering – will become regular fixtures at the market on the corner of Lonsdale and Girrahween Streets following the Winter Wonderland events.
“Rug up and make the most of these gorgeous Canberra winter days outdoors, find that special something from our artisanal products and produce while picking up your weekly shop for your winter Sunday roast,” says market co-director Rosie Green.
Canberra’s newest farmers market, Haig Park Village Markets, is open every Sunday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, including public holiday long weekends. The two Winter Wonderland-themed markets will be held on August 1 and 8. Check the website for updates, including the potential impact of COVID-19 restrictions on events and market days.
