Get excited, Canberra! The winter season visit from the friendly crew at Mov’In Cars, the drive-in movie specialists at the Questacon carpark, was such a hit they are coming back for the start of school holidays and staying until mid-December.
With their first movie Dirty Dancing screening on 24 September, their movie line-up is all about school holidays and entertaining the kids with Jumanji, Spies in Disguise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Frozen and Aladdin.
And forget dinner. Feed the kids pizza at the movies and spring for bottomless popcorn.
This time around, because of daylight saving, there will only be one screening per evening, but the experience of going to the drive-in is as popular as ever. Ticket pre-sales are available on the Mov’In Cars website, with ticket prices for a car of 1 to 5 people available for $59.95, and 1 to 2 people for $49.50 per car.
The venue will again be the Questacon car park, with gates opening at 6:30 pm, and movies screening at 8:00 pm. Again, for those who don’t have a car, Peugeot is partnering with Mov’In cars to provide vehicles for the occasion. Champagne is also on offer for the Peugeot guest vehicles.
One of the special deals on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for people arriving prior to 7:30 pm is all you can eat pizza for an hour, and you can buy limitless movie food at the kiosk including Mov’In Cars own special version of choc top ice creams, and a fully licensed bar for those not driving.
Mov’In Cars’ Vincent Hernandez said the first drive-in movie season in Canberra was very positively received.
“We had people at the back setting up a kind of living room between two cars with a couch. People get really creative with their movie watching set up,” he said, “and people set up the boot of their cars to watch from, setting up very comfy seats.
“It won’t be as cold this time, the weather will be spring and summertime, and the November and December nights will be beautiful,” he said.
“Last time, people really loved it, and I was surprised when we sent our first newsletter, heaps of people bought tickets for four or five movies at a time.
“People love it, they’re coming back saying how great the food was, we only had positive feedback from Canberrans and it’s all in a COVID-19 safe environment within your own car.
“We are showing some movies that are older, but we have heaps of new content to share with Canberra,” said Vincent.
When asked if the drive-in cinema will become a regular Canberra feature, Vincent said it’s a definite possibility.
“Canberra is definitely on the map for us, it’s close to Sydney so there’s less driving for us, and it worked so well, it’s definitely on the agenda for us to set up a more or less regular season.”
Cars are placed in order of height to provide the best cinema experience for all. As an outdoor event, the drive-in movie is subject to weather, and will not cancel for light or intermittent rain. It is a good idea to check your windscreen wipers are working if the weather looks like rain. Screenings are only cancelled if the weather poses a safety threat to patrons and staff, and an email or SMS is used to notify ticket holders by 4:00 pm on the day of the screening, and a notice posted on Mov’In Cars Facebook page.
If you would like to see a Mov’In Cars screening schedule for September and October, or to book tickets, visit their website, and watch their Facebook page for the latest information.
