Serendipity. Say it out loud, it sounds fun – it means an unplanned, fortunate discovery. It’s the perfect word to use for the discovery Midnight Hotel general manager Kristy Ryan recently made at Canberra’s Handmade market.
Walking about the market tables, Kristy came across Antipodes Gin. Little was she to know, her decision to go to the markets that day would lead to a whole new offering at Midnight Bar, Braddon’s vibrant and inviting lounge bar on the ground level of Midnight Hotel.
“I came across Antipodes at the Handmade markets a few months ago. When I learned the unique story of their products, I knew straight away, I wanted Antipodes gins at our bar,” Kristy says.
But her luck that day didn’t stop there.
“By pure coincidence, a few weeks later Antipodes director Shane Reid and his team literally walked into our bar. So I approached them and asked if they wanted to make Midnight Bar the place to showcase their products.”
So now, the Canberra gin has a new home and Kristy says the serendipitous partnership is a match made in heaven: “The coolest gin in Canberra is teaming up with the coolest bar in Canberra.”
Kristy and her team at the hotel have a passion for supporting the local community and the businesses that come with them.
Australia’s only organic and certified gin, Antipodes has a range of high-quality gin products including classic, pink, oceanic, chai, espresso and plenty more that can now be sampled at the bar.
Antipodes gin is available as a tasting experience as well as incorporated into the bar’s signature cocktails.
Kristy says when it comes to tasting gins it’s important to get a feel for the spirit itself before adding in mixers and various botanicals – offered with a tasting paddle at Midnight Bar.
“You want to taste the gin neat as a first sip; you can then adjust it accordingly based on what you might think it needs,” Kristy says.
Moving to Canberra from the Hunter Valley six years ago, Antipodes director Shane Reid says the distiller’s move to Canberra to produce their product was strategic.
“Canberra has some of the highest quality water which is important when creating high-quality drinks,” Shane says.
“Having said that, the main reason behind the move is because Canberrans are absolute champions when it comes to using renewable energy when manufacturing products and that’s what we’re all about.”
Midnight Bar is located next to the light rail stop on Elouera Street and Kristy says a visit to Midnight Bar will be one to remember.
“We have so many enthusiastic bartenders waiting to take your order and make sure you have a great night with us.”
