Saffron Mezze House

| Editor

A perfect exponent of Middle Eastern cuisine, Saffron Mezze House continues to deliver on high quality food, professional service and genuine warmth in the heart of old Kingston.

Saffron Mezze House started life in a cosy corner of Manuka over a decade ago and made the move to its current location a little over two years ago. Co-owners Max and Marven Azize have been honing the offer here ever since; their mission being to create a gentrified and modern dining experience that pays tribute to their roots and embraces the cuisines of Lebanon, Greece and Turkey, aptly called East Mediterranean by the brothers. From the kitchen of Saffron Mezze House, chef Max delivers an impressive range of authentic mezze style dishes that may either act as starters for those wishing to dine in the Western style, or constitute the heart of a banquet if one is inclined to share in the more traditional Eastern style. Categorised as either hot or cold, these dishes—whilst familiar to many—are executed with a deft touch. The expected selection of dips is delicate and refined, and a fatoush salad will impress with a burst of tangy freshness. Pastry, pulses and lamb play a starring roll in the hot category, with sambusek—minced lamb and onion pastries—or kebbe— cracked wheat, minced lamb and pine nut croquettes—indicative. Mains may include grilled lamb cutlets with tomato, chili and red wine, or barramundi baked with tahini and coriander. Spicy tagines are also on offer, and cover various meats and a vegetarian option. At the front, service is led by the urbane and genuinely warm Marven, whose knowledge of the cuisine and care for patron’s needs combine to deliver a pleasurable experience. No attitude here, just refined service delivered by grownups with a real understanding of hospitality. If you find yourself in unfamiliar territory, Marven is on hand to guide you through, even to the point of ordering dishes based on your tastes, or to share an anecdote or two. Otherwise, expect to be left alone to enjoy your meal.
