La Rustica

| Editor

La Rustica is a family run business that continues to turn out reliably good Italian dishes which include authentic house made pastas and gnocchi, seafood and of course pizzas…

As the name of this restaurant implies, the food here is rustic and authentic. Expect to find a simple and delicious hand made gnocchi Sorrento, with rich tomato and basil sauce; or the very popular spaghetti pescatore, absolutely crammed with fresh seafood. Hailing from Calabria’s Mare Ionico in the southern tip of Italy, the team at La Rustica brings with it the region’s culinary secrets. As Calabrian cuisine contains a long tradition of seafood, expect to see much of it on the blackboard and on the regular menu. Portions, especially pastas and risottos, are particularly generous.

La Rustica is a family run business continues to turn out a huge selection of reliably good Italian dishes which include authentic house made pastas and gnocchi, seafood and of course, pizzas.

Mains are substantial, and may be beef tenderloins layered with a combination of spinach and crisp prosciutto, topped with a red wine jus; or a grilled perch fillet topped with extra virgin olive oil and a lemon juice dressing. Pizzas are a highlight, and follow the classic style, rather than the more modern interpretations on offer in many places these days. The Napoli is a simple mozzarella cheese, anchovy, olive and oregano affair, and a salsicce features Italian pork sausage, onion and chilli. Like the menu, the La Rustica wine list is big. It offers Australian, New Zealand, and Italian labels. The interior is simple and bright. Hanging greenery and a combination of treated and untreated wood surfaces give a rustic touch, and an expansive window frontage wraps around the restaurant, giving diners a view to the new harbourside activity.
