With views over Bougainville Street and a welcoming atmosphere, Jewel of India is one of Canberra’s most well known and loved Indian restaurants, continuing to do great quality Indian in the heart of the inner south.

Long established Jewel of India has been a favourite of a number of visiting Indian delegates and High Commissioners over the many years it has been open, no doubt due to its mainstay of beautifully presented slow-cooked standards and its banquet menu of unlimited serves. Original owner Venkatesh Ramachandran has recently passed the reigns on to niece Shruti Ruzario, who brings a modern energy to the place including a regular blog with informative articles about this great cuisine.

In the Jewel of India kitchen, equal standing is given to both scorching southern flavours and the north’s aromatic fare here. A fiery yet flavoursome vindaloo is a hallmark. Kadhai dishes – wok fried and served on a sizzling platter – are also popular, stealing the scene every time they’re served. Of course, the menu includes a variety of choices and a wide variety of vegetarian mains include cottage cheese dumplings in cashew nut gravy, button mushrooms in a mild cashew sauce, or black lentils with tomato, garlic, butter and cream. For those wanting to sample a range of items, the Jewel Feast features an assortment of aloo tikki, chicken tikka, lamb cutlets, seekh kebab & fried prawns with choices of meat and vegetable curry, raita, naan, rice & pappadams. Any dish can be adapted to suit special diets or individual tastes, and a good range Australian wine is available, along with Indian beers, such as Kingfisher and Taj Mahal.
