On entering Gryphons Caffe & Bar, it certainly looks and feels like you’ve entered one of those neighbourhood pubs that carry the title ‘hidden gem’. Located in the leafy surrounds of Griffiths Barker Street, this is a venue with a relaxed atmosphere that welcomes all its patrons as regulars. A meeting spot for locals to catch up for a beer, wine, a bite to eat, or to watch a favourite sporting event, Gryphons offers a dozen domestic and international beers on tap, together with a clever selection of wines. The menu is a big drawcard here; the kitchen delivers a comfortable and inclusive selection of food that caters to many tastes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available every day of the week. Breakfast may be a simple affair or a little more adventurous. The Scandinavian donuts with fresh banana and rich chocolate sauce will delight sweet-tooths, as will Oreo pancakes with bacon, maple syrup and toasted pecan parfait. Baked eggs are craftily created and come with chorizo, bacon, mushroom, tomato, avocado, corn pickle relish, roquette & sourdough. For lunch and dinner, inverted stuffed jalapenos are little crispy battered cones, filled with chipotle and ricotta or Spanish chorizo and olives with lemon and parsley. For mains, choose from classic fish & chips, beef ribs, and chicken parmigana, a selection of grilled steaks and a tantalizing range of pizzas. A unique selection of burgers includes American pulled pork, coleslaw with a house made relish, or beef with beetroot bacon and egg; a little more daring is the soft shell crab, taramosalata and pickled coleslaw. Salads, sides and kids meals are also available, as are a number of creative weekly specials that are definitely worth a try. A sunny deck at the back of the restaurant overlooks the local park, and downstairs, a hidden cellar holds an extensive wine collection and is an ideal spot for an intimate function or get together.
