Verity Lane’s famous Chilli Week returns with a heated celebration of all things spice! The vendors have been busy preparing special menu items that are sure to rank high on the Scoville scale.
“Chilli week lets all our vendors celebrate a beloved ingredient amongst all of their cultural backgrounds and bring a bit of heat to the Market Hall for Canberra to enjoy in one special flavourful week,” explains Verity Lane Market’s general manager Kathryn Oplantzakis.
“This year, we’ve moved the event to be closer to Winter – a time which is much more synonymous with hot, spicy food to both warm the body and clear the sinuses. Locals and visitors alike are going to love turning up the heat as the weather cools around them.”
This event will also be the last for vendor Lim Peh’s Wonton Noodles. He’ll end his time in the food hall at the end of May. The Singaporean noodle vendor has been a crowd favourite since he launched a year ago. Lovers of their duck noodle soup and chee cheong fun (rice noodle rolls) are hoping that they will follow in the path of other Verity Lane alums like Ramen Daddy and open up a full restaurant. A recent Instagram post hints that new things are in the works, saying they “won’t be gone for long”.
Kathryn Oplantzakis says the Verity team wishes them well: “While we are sad to see them depart, we know they are off to achieve big dreams and are so thrilled we are able to celebrate Chilli Week with them before they go.”
Lim Peh’s will serve the traditional dish Hainanese Chicken Rice with a Garlic Chilli Sauce and cucumber medley as their last special dish for Chilli Week.
Spanish stall La Cocina Pura will have jalapeño poppers, a chilli fried chicken burger from Seoul Chicken, and an Amatriciana pizza with spicy ‘nduja salami from Pizza Artigiana.
Indonesian stall Rasa Rosa will turn up the heat on a chilli chicken Ayam Rarang, while the team from Superbao will numb tongues with their Szechuan chicken bites!
And the bar staff have perfected their spicy chilli mango margaritas to wash it all down with.
But if it gets too much for you, don’t worry: as always, the team has extra milk on hand to soothe any burning mouths, and you can always take a walk in the Canberra air to cool down your red face!
Chilli Week will run from May 9 to 18 at Verity Lane Market in the Sydney Building, 50 Northbourne Ave.
Verity Lane is open from midday until late, Tuesday to Saturday. Follow Verity Lane Markets on Facebook or Instagram, or visit their website to learn more about the individual stallholders.
