Blu Ginger

| Editor

Blu Ginger makes a big impression with its contemporary feel and its refined take on authentic cuisine. This polished restaurant has gained a solid following amongst lovers of quality Indian food since opening its doors five years ago. The sibling of long established Blu Ginger at McMahon’s Point in Sydney, this restaurant certainly has more of a big city feel, with a cavernous yet well appointed dining room enhanced by polished floors, dark timber furnishings and towering polished concrete Y frames that attract the eye upwards and give a feeling of openness. From the kitchen, expect to find a range of contemporary yet authentic dishes that confirm this is no mum-and-dad ethnic diner. Dishes are delicate and surprising. A chicken chekari is chicken breast rolled with herbs and green chilli, the flavour of the chillies adding rather than dominating to the flavour. Fish fillets are minced and mixed with herbs, then wrapped in vine leaves in a mediterranean style. Badami lamb cutlets are marinated in badam–almond paste–and cooked in the tandoor, then covered with coriander, mint and pistachio. Classic curries are refined and flavoursome, and are given a heat rating on the menu. Ever popular rogan josh has a rich gravy, and comes with fresh tomatoes and coriander; and Sagwala is made with lamb, beef or chicken, and cooked with a spinach puree and cream. A range of weekly specials, most of which are unique to Blu Ginger and rarely seen outside India, may include tandoori cooked salmon fillets served on a bed of crispy, vermicelli-like potato bahji. Desserts are relatively simple and may be ice cream with lychees, or traditional favourites like gulab jamun or pistachio kulfi. A concise yet good wine list offers some well known Australian labels, and a number of beers are available by the bottle, including a couple of Indian labels perfect for spicy food.
