Kids and carers from across the nation’s capital are invited to join Tuggeranong Arts Centre for their fun-filled Grand Day Out on Saturday, 16 November.
The TAC team is putting on a range of free activities from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Attend an art, dance or drama class, join in on explorative art-making, or sit back, relax and soak up the springtime while enjoying live entertainment by the lake.
It’s also an excellent opportunity to introduce the family to one of TAC’s many term-based programs, including the ever-popular Fresh Funk, which has been a Canberra dance staple for more than two decades.
CEO Caroline Downer says the centre’s Grand Day Out is a chance for visitors of all ages to check out everything TAC has to offer. Every activity is free, although art, drama and dance classes do require bookings.
“As well as a sneak peek of Fresh Funk, we will be running structured art workshops and Funky Fairytales drama sessions, alongside more casual drop-in activities led by local artists,” Caroline says.
“TAC’s art tutor, Gina Chapman, will have kids painting their own underwater world full of wacky crazy creatures you hope to never meet in the Tuggeranong Lake or under the sea in a series of playful aged-based art classes.
“Drop-in art sessions include Puppet Power, where little ones can create their own googly-eyed puppets, Robot Creations, which transforms cardboard into take-home robots, Zine book-making, and colourful yarnfun with Fish Stix.”
Upstairs in The Space, visitors of all ages can enjoy First Nations weaving and song with Yuma Yarn artists Belle and Rechelle. Once the afternoon rolls around, gather by the piano for a sing-a-long with Leisa Keen.
Teens can check out thrilling music videos by the 2024 TAC Battle of the Bands finalists in the theatre, and there’s even a relaxed sketching session planned by the lake for all ages.
Outdoors, the lakeside stage will feature performances by local artists and community groups, including Belle Whyte, Gugan Gulwan music students, Fresh Funk, Belly Up, Tuggeranong Valley Band, and Sing with Toby, led by the Community Music Centre’s Tobias Cole.
TAC’s Grand Day Out runs alongside the first day of SouthFest 2024, which promises to transform the town centre’s streets, laneways and foreshore into a bustling hub of creativity.
There will be a range of food vendors to choose from, plus engaging workshops, community games, market stalls, live entertainment and more.
“Between your activities at TAC, why not grab a bite and explore SouthFest?” Caroline says.
“Our Grand Day Out is an opportunity to showcase everything we do here at TAC, but it’s also a really fun way to bring people together in a relaxed, casual setting at no cost to them.
“I’m looking forward to seeing fresh and familiar faces alike, ready to celebrate everything the arts has to offer while connecting with other members of their community.”
The TAC Grand Day Out will run from 10 am until 2 pm on Saturday, 16 November. All events are free, but some require bookings. Secure your spot at Tuggeranong Arts Centre.
