Sure, smashed avo on toast is nice, but if I am going into debt over my breakfast choices, I am going to eat cake! Well, pancakes. The irresistible combination of a simple batter, fried and served up with syrup and complementary toppings is my menu pick for morning café catch-ups.
The good news is most breakfast menus in the city have a version to try. Whether it is hotcakes, crepes, or pancakes, the options range from a simple stack to over the top Instagrammable creations. Region Media has teed up three tempting tasty types to try.
For something sweet: Urban Pantry
In the heart of iconic Manuka Lawns, Urban Pantry delights diners with its beautiful location, aesthetic and food offerings.
Using white as their overarching colour – from the white-framed windows to big farm door, Bentwood chairs and marble mosaic tabletops – Urban Pantry epitomises rustic casual elegance offering both indoor and outdoor dining.
Open for breakfast and lunch with an all-day menu, it is the perfect spot for chowing down among the beautiful oak trees with the sunlight pouring in and watching the comings and goings of bustling Manuka.
A menu item that has been exciting adults and kids alike is the Buttermilk Pancakes with a vanilla bean crème brûlée, blueberry compote, toasted almonds and organic maple syrup. It is a sweet indulgence that hits all the right notes with the crunch of the almonds and tartness of the blueberries.
Urban Pantry is located at 5 Bougainville St, Griffith and is open 7 days a week from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm.
For something colourful: Crepe Stop
A café that’s dedicated to churning out crepe perfection in Braddon opened in July. Down a little side alley off Mort St, Crepe Stop’s intimate space has a Parisian air to it.
Owner Michael makes Australia’s only Rainbow Crepe. He uses the rainbow crepe in both savoury and sweet dishes. Watching as he creates his colourful masterpiece in front of you is hypnotic and adds to the spectacle.
The crepe is perfect for eating just on its own with no topping. Their texture is silken, smooth, tender and delicately thin. But for a colour pop in the middle to match the outside, try a smoked salmon rainbow crepe. Smeared in a secret avocado spread, with layers of pink smoked salmon and fresh salad, every mouthful is delicious as well as being very Instagrammable.
Crepe Stop is located at 32 Mort St, Braddon and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am.
For something Elvis would order: The Kitchen Garden at Rodney’s
The Kitchen Garden at Rodney’s – housed inside the landmark nursery, Rodney’s Plants Plus – has been a staple on the café scene in Canberra since 1996.
It is a bustling sprawling indoor-outdoor space with a cracking all-day menu, inspiring specials, rotating cake fridge and the bonus of serving wine. The café has been taking nursery eating to a whole new level for over a decade but remains family-friendly with its permanent fixture of an outdoor playground and dedicated children’s menu. The recent renovation and expansion have elevated it, even more, to give it a conservatory French farmhouse feel.
From the café menu, try a dish that would have satisfied Elvis’s cravings – a stack of Buttermilk Pancakes with honeycomb butter, banana, finished with maple syrup, with an added side of bacon. The dish is a big hunka-hunka burnin’ love. The challenge is getting the perfect bite with a little of each ingredient and not skimping on the honeycomb butter.
The Kitchen Garden At Rodney’s is located at 24 Beltana Road, Pialligo. It’s open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily.
