In the era of mass communication through social media, having a friend take the time to personally send you a photo of their lunch is the highest culinary endorsement a meal can receive, and that’s how I found myself at Fyshwick’s The Snack Shack with a massive ham salad sandwich in my hand.
If you read half as much food media as me, you’ll have noticed the sandwiches are having a moment. Dedicated sandwich shops are opening up around the nation, and thanks to publications like the Good Food Guides Sandwich Watch, queues are not uncommon.
This new-wave sandwich boom is largely chef-led, so you can imagine what that means. Mortadella imported from Bologna, confit field mushrooms, and fillings that push the boundaries of what should be in a sandwich. Think lasagne, rendang and eggplant parmigiana.

The good ol’ sandwich is being elevated in a way that’s left me nostalgic for the classics, and The Snack Shack is the spiritual home of the unadulterated sandwich.
Don’t be fooled by the industrial location under the Tyres & More sign, The Snack Shack has managed to do what few places can. With no fancy menu, no trending Instagram, and no marketing whatsoever, they draw an enviable lunch crowd who come to enjoy the classics done right.
The menu is solid but not vast; they’ve honed in on a range that suits their largely trades and defence-based clientele, and across brekky and lunch, you can grab ham, beef, tandoori chicken, tuna, egg, cheese, steak and BLT sandwiches, all with the salad optional, plus you can grab the salad as a standalone filling. There’s also a selection of burgers, including a classic hamburger, chicken schnitzel burger, fish burger, or a Mexican burger.
Despite the hungry masses who descend on this place each day, this is a finely tuned team, and they churn out sandwiches and burgers at a pace that keeps the tables turning. Order to eat in, and they’ll bring it to your table; even more impressively, they do it without handing out a number, and it still manages to find the right faces.

The doorstopper bread and ultra-crunchy salad make for a satisfying sandwich, and with the addition of Tandoori chicken, it’s a real winner. Photo: Martin Conway.
Since it was my first visit to The Snack Shack, there was no way I wasn’t eating a ham salad sandwich, but because I care about our readers, I squeezed in a second option to give you a broader spectrum and grabbed a Tandoori chicken sandwich as well.
Cutting right to the chase, I can’t remember the last time I had a sandwich this good, and their secret is actually in the salad – it’s so fresh, crunchy and well-seasoned that the success of the whole sandwich hinges on its textures. The bread is also doorstopper thick with no sog whatsoever, and the sandwich is structurally sound, so there’s no picking bits and pieces off your plate. Size-wise, it’s a full meal, so you walk away satisfied with your fill.
If you’re a sandwich purist or just looking for something quick, affordable and delicious, you can take this as your sign to head to Tyres and More, sorry, I mean The Snack Shack.
The Snack Shack is located at 3 Yallourn Street, Fyshwick. They’re open Monday to Friday from 7 am to 2:30 pm. (The Snack Shack is on Facebook, but it was last updated in December 2024 …)
