Yes, it’s expensive to go out these days. But life is all about the simple pleasures and there are few pastimes more pleasurable than burgers and beers with mates.
The trick is to make it worth your money. Look for venues that offer some friendly competition and live entertainment alongside a hearty feed and you’ll have a seriously good time on your hands and won’t feel as guilty about spending that hard-earned cash.
Enter Capital Brewing Co in Fyshwick. This crew will jump on any opportunity to get the crowd pumping. Their flagship taproom on Dairy Road regularly hosts sports match viewing parties, seasonal festivals and of course, mid-week trivia.
The taproom also happens to be under the same roof as the brewery, which produces about two million litres of beer, cider and ready-to-drink products a year.
“It’s always lively here with a very social atmosphere. We love putting on a good party fuelled by the freshest beers around,” operations manager Mark Ramsay says.
“Our taproom first opened in 2017. It’s open and warm, with a mix of enclosed and open-air spaces including the courtyard, main taproom and beer garden.”
Don’t forget to bring the kids along! Capital Brewing is family-friendly, with a cubby house to explore and more than enough lawn space for little ones to burn off that before-meal energy. Friendly dogs are also welcome.
Brodburger shares the huge venue space, slinging juicy burgers and hotdogs while the brewers keep everyone hydrated.

Right, onto those events. There’s something to get involved in almost every day of the week.
Running on select Tuesdays until the end of the year are film screenings centred around the outdoor adventure communities Canberra loves most: running, fishing, climbing and more.
Wednesday brings the classic mid-week trivia night, presented for free by Fame Trivia. Get in quick if you’re keen for a table, because this books out every week.
“We’re coming up to this year’s final State of Origin viewing parties, which also fall on Wednesdays, so the atmosphere is bound to be electric on both sides of the venue,” Mark says.
“On Friday afternoons, we break out the Wheel of Pour-tune and give our patrons the chance to win free beer and giveaways.
“If you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, consider a Saturday paddle tasting session, or bring the kids for free face painting on Sundays.”
Capital Brewing members, known as the Good Natured Crew, get access to exclusive events; think chocolate pairings, comedy nights and Boilermaker sessions with master brewers and distillers.
For private events including weddings, birthdays and corporate functions, consider the lush courtyard or beer garden. There’s no hire fee, just a minimum spend.
If you’re keen to go behind the scenes, why not book a guided tour of the brewery?
Over the course of an hour, you’ll travel through the facility and learn the ins and outs of how Capital Brewing produces its beers. The team will even spot you a complimentary middy of coast ale as the tour kicks off and a schooner of core range to wrap things up.
“We’re really proud to stand among the biggest independently owned breweries in Australia and run one of the largest hospitality venues in the ACT,” Mark says.
“It’s our pleasure to show our venue off and meet people who love the brewing craft just as much as we do.
“Canberra is so lucky to have such an awesome hospitality culture … the best way you can support our industry and keep the venues you love in good shape is to get out there with your mates, buy a local beer and have some good old-fashioned fun.”
Capital Brewing Co is open from 11:30 am seven days a week at 3/1 Dairy Road, Fyshwick.
