Is Diamond Dave Canberra’s next big sports star?

The official announcement of Canberra boxer ‘Diamond’ Dave Toussaint’s upcoming fight was a relatively low key affair. Scheduled for a foggy Monday morning in the middle of last week’s Queen’s Birthday long weekend at the somewhat hidden away  Stockade Gym in Dickson, it belied the importance of his bout with American Shane Mosley Junior.

The fight will take place on July 2nd at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane as part of the undercard for the highly anticipated Manny Pacquiao vs Jeff Horn fight. Expected to attract a crowd of over 40,000 spectators, the Brisbane event is shaping up to be the biggest boxing event in Australian history.

In a demonstration of how highly regarded this fight is, the hard hitting middleweight finds himself in the thick of what is being hailed as the ‘highlight of the undercard.’ His opponent Shane Mosley Junior is boxing royalty. The son of legendary champion ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, he brings a serious pedigree along with a record of 10 wins from 11 fights.

Toussaint on the other hand has a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 fights, with eight by way of knockout. One of Australia’s most promising young fighters, he has earned respect from all corners of the boxing community of Australia, including high praise from former champ Danny Geale and Jeff Horn’s promoters Duco Events, who consider him a future world champion.

With the likes of legendary boxers Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Evander Holyfield ringside, as well as huge interest from across the Pacific for the main event, Toussaint is assured of massive exposure. A good showing will put him squarely in the sights of the biggest promoters in the world. Even more so if he puts Mosley on the canvas.

Every promoter loves a good technical fighter, but they salivate for a guy that can land a knockout. Toussaint has shown he can do both, so it may not be long before we add him to the growing list of Canberra sports legends. We wish him well and advise Canberrans to ‘watch this space.’
