It’s going to be the biggest New Year’s Eve party in town and all Canberra is invited.

The shores of Lake Burley Griffin will hum with festivities as two spectacular fireworks displays light up the skies during the night.

The annual ACT Government event will attract thousands to the various sites around the lake and the public is being urged to pre-plan and be prepared to make the most of the night, including deciding on travel options and checking road closures.

Festivities begin from 6 pm with revellers urged to arrive early to find a good spot at one of the four celebration hubs – Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Place, Regatta Point (near the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre) and Ferry Gate (near Nerang Pool).

Getting there can be easy by taking free public transport services available to and from the event.

Light rail services have been extended with the last service departing from Gungahlin Place stop at 1 am and Alinga Street stop at 1:30 am.

Additional bike racks will be available at the hub locations as well as additional Neuron scooter-designated parking bays close to hub entrances. Check the Neuron app for details.

If you plan on driving, there are many carparks around the lake’s perimeter within the National Triangle, Reid and in the city.

But some roads will be closed, including Parkes Way and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge as a result of the festivities.

The first fireworks show ignites at the family-friendly time of 9 pm. Three hours later the second set of pyrotechnics will blast off at the end of the countdown marking the end of 2024 and heralding in 2025.

Both shows come with a live soundtrack broadcast by Mix 106.3 as the fireworks launch from Central Basin and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.

Each hub will feature local DJs, a variety of food and drink options and amenities. Or just pack a picnic. Visit the Events ACT website for more details.

After the fireworks, the party can move into the city’s restaurants and venues where extended trading hours will keep the celebrations going.

Visit the New Year’s Eve website for more information on the celebrations including road closures and transport information.
