Overlooking Dickson’s most well known Asian eat street, The Scholar Chinese seafood restaurant is regarded amongst yum cha connoisseurs for its wide variety and high quality dumplings (particularly the steamed variety), which they say is the mark of a good yum cha restaurant. The Scholar also serves up live seafood, its impressive aquarium filled with a selection of fish, lobster and crabs. This is a Chinese restaurant that prides itself on its seafood, and the menu confirms it with exotic specialties such as abalone, king crab and parrotfish. The Japanese style pan-fried halibut fish fillet is testament that simple yet fresh quality ingredients are favoured here.

‘Yum Cha aside, The Scholar is a restaurant that prides itself on its seafood, and the menu confirms it with exotic specialties such as abalone, king crab and parrotfish.’

The kitchen doesn’t overlook other tastes, offering a typical selection of popular Chinese dishes – think crispy duck, Mongolian lamb, hot rock salt squid, steak with black pepper sauce et al, but the more curious diner may be tempted by stone grilled sliced beef tongue, oxtail soup and pig trout in plum sauce. Standout dishes here include crispy beef brisket, lamb cutlet in cumin seed and, fragrant quail hot pot and from the dim sum selection, fried dragon ball, pan-fried chicken bun and deluxe seafood and garlic chives dumplings. Located upstairs, the Scholar’s fit-out is typical of this type of restaurant. No surprises, a casual atmosphere and authentic classic Cantonese food set the scene for a highly enjoyable dining experience.
