Sage Dining Rooms

| Editor

While all the hype about Braddon tends to focus on the emerging strip on the city’s semi industrial northern fringe, just a few hundred metres away and only a block from the CBD, you will find Sage, a modern but charming fine diner located within the lovely heritage listed Gorman House…

Over the last few years, under the stewardship of brothers Peter and Michael Harrington (also owners of the wildly popular AKIBA in the city) Sage has gained a reputation as one of Canberra’s best. Today, it continues to push the envelope with innovative dishes that embrace the zeitgeist and showcase great local produce, including that from the restaurant’s own farm. The menu here is designed to be experienced in its entirety and as such, a fixed price for three courses is offered rather than individual plates.

Typically, one may expect a starter of sugar cured ocean trout with avocado, wasabi and olive; a main of beef cheek with celeriac, eschalots, sage and butter; and a dessert of chocolate couscous with espresso ice cream, orange and meringue. A serious wine list is a perfect complement to the food here, and takes in some of the best regions in the world; local region, Australian, European and American winemakers are represented here. The dining room is smart and cosy — fashionable striped walls and floral banquette seating complement plush chairs and napery — opening onto a deck overlooking an idyllic garden bar that is gaining a reputation for its excellent cocktails.
