La Capanna

There was a time when the beautiful leafy shopping precinct of Kingston was thought of as Canberra’s answer to Lygon Street; a little Italy in the heart of the inner south. La Capanna, like a couple of its long time neighbours, was one of the unpretentious and casual neighbourhood restaurants that contributed to this reputation with familiar and friendly service and a rustic approach. Its name means ‘the hut’ In Italian, and its décor – which hasn’t changed here for the best part of three decades – confirms it. Today, not much has changed. Yes, there is a new and younger management adding fresh energy, with owner Stefan Heydon buying the restaurant around a year ago after working as head chef for some time, but the legacy remains intact.

“A charming and laid back place, La Capanna is recommended for those wishing to grab a quick and delicious meal without too much fuss…”

That legacy is grounded by the idea of pushing out a simple and affordable but delicious food offer in a family friendly and unpretentious space. Devotees of the Paleo diet be warned; this little place is a temple of carbs. Pizza is the mainstay and has been afforded cult status by many in the capital, its thick and puffy edges recognisable to all. Pasta – supplied by famed Italian producer De Cecco –runs a close second; with classic salads, breads and Italian desserts rounding out the whole thing. Yes, you may grab an antipasto, or one of the two very tempting seafood dishes, but you would be missing the point if you chose not to indulge on this one occasion. A charming and laid back place, La Capanna is recommended for those wishing to grab a quick and delicious meal without too much fuss.
