Grazing at Gundaroo

| Editor

In this beautiful old building built in the 1830s, the site of the Gundaroo Pub for longer than anyone can remember, you will find Grazing at Gundaroo, a bastion of the region’s country dining ethos. For a number of years, Grazing—just a half hour drive from Canberra—has been at the forefront of the growing movement in this part of the world that embraces the best of local produce, and showcases it with real pride in the region. Everything that can be supplied locally is. At the hands of chef and owner Kurt Neumann, elegant dishes express this philosophy of freshness, manifesting in the refined country fare that Grazing is loved for. For starters, expect rare olive oil poached yellowfin tuna with crisp octopus, chorizo custard and cauliflower; or ash rolled and roasted duck breast with duck ham shavings, sweetcorn and pepita. Mains may be slow cooked lamb with flageolet, broad bean, mint and lemon; or a comforting ‘Grazing Pie’, filled with snapper, scallop and mussels, and served with house made tomato relish and buttermilk mayonnaise. Vegetarian options are no afterthought, and get their own category on the menu, as do children’s meals. A thoughtful touch on the menu is a wine pairing for each of the dishes, available by the glass. All wines are exclusively Canberra region; likewise tap beers by Canberra brewery Zeirholz. A typical dessert may be white- chocolate and strawberry ice cream with goat’s cheese and mascarpone panna cotta, rhubarb and white balsamic jellies, and a selection of fine Australian boutique cheeses is served with house baked fruit bread, apple and stewed fig compote. In the beautifully appointed antique dining rooms, co-owner Tanya Neumann oversees an efficient and youthful team of locals, her experience running some of Canberra’s finer restaurants being the factor in its polish and warmth. At the back of the original building, a splendid function room is a much newer addition. Managing to merge modern minimalist style with rural charm, it is a perfect venue for weddings or other high-end functions.
