While The Duxton has become a familiar name in the inner north pub scene over the last five years, its complete redevelopment last year has finally brought the big vision home…

Only a few streets away from Northbourne Avenue ­– Canberra’s ‘main drag’ and entry point – O’connor is a typical snapshot of Canberra’s inner suburban life. Older, leafy, urbane, increasingly gentrified; and with a neighbourhood shopping centre perfect as a good food and drink destination. It is here we find The Duxton, a reinvented and refurbished two storey venue that is taking inspiration from mega-pubs like Sydney’s Beresford, Newtown and Coogee Bay hotels. Downstairs, the sprawling space does a great job of catering for a mix of local neighbourhood drinker and discerning pub food lover. Under the stewardship of head chef Jean-Phillipe Secondis, pub fare is front and centre; but this is a sophisticated take and a high quality offer influenced by American, European, Middle Eastern and Aussie tastes.

The open kitchen – now massive and equipped with wood fired rotisserie and grill – is the source of mouth-watering wafts of carnivorous anticipation. Whole rotisserie chicken, boldly seasoned and served with potato bake, smashed peas and iceberg lettuce is typical of what to expect, as is slow cooked lamb with cabbage slaw, pickles and mint yoghurt. Steaks are high priority as is the range of towering burgers with glazed milk buns, served with thick cut chips. Classics like fish and chips, schnitzels, parmas, and thin crusted pizzas get a makeover; and the short but excellent wine list is truly parochial, featuring some great Canberrans. Upstairs, a new rooftop terrace is recommended on warm nights, and a cosy and very chic cocktail bar perfect for kicking on.
