Lonsdale Street has become a defining address for Canberra’s hip culture in recent times, and there are perhaps two or three businesses on the street that have been serious contributors to this idea. From the perspective of coffee, the name that stands out is Lonsdale Street Roasters. Located at two addresses, a couple of hundred metres apart on the same street, Lonsdale Street Roasters is home grown, earthy and hip. On weekdays, professionals make there way here for take-aways before work or for casual business meetings over breakfast or lunch, mixing it with the eclectic crowd of uni-students, cyclists and arty retailers that contribute to the gritty urban vibe here. Of course, as the name suggests, coffee is roasted on premises (across the back lane at number 23) in a serious operation that supplies both Lonsdale Street cafes along with two more of their sister cafes in other parts of town, as well as general retail and wholesale. From the Eatery, head chef Paul Hutt keeps the focus on classic, simple food with quality ingredients and a leaning toward American flavours. Wherever possible, ingredients are sourced from Canberra’s increasing cadre of award-winning local suppliers and producers, and an imported hand-made pit-barbecue uses local white oak to flavour beef briskets, pork shoulders, local trout, ham and poultry. Although both cafés share an overall theme, they each have their own feel. At number 7, a cosy and familiar downstairs area gives way to a quieter upper floor that looks more art studio than café, perfect for daytime business meetings and private lunches. Up the road at number 23, the slightly industrial smell of roasting beans mixes with smoky barbecue to permeate the air, giving a context to the bodies, bicycles and bustle–not just of the café, but also of the whole street.
