The nation’s capital needs a politically themed bar, and this Franklin Street venue is a wink and a nod to Canberra as the hive of national politics. Those looking for a fun night will do well to make their way up the stairs to this award-winning bar. Hosts Mary-Jane and Emily—and their attentive team—have created an intimate environment here, making you feel as if you have been invited to a private party. Naturally, it is only fitting that you find yourself striking up a conversation with the friendly bar staff or locals, as this is a place that encourages a bit of bar chat. Schmoozy jazz is kept low, allowing conversation and shenanigans to rule. Most nights, some quirky activity may be on offer, from comedy, burlesque, cabaret, live jazz, magic, tarot, karaoke and a range of board games. The library is well stocked with all sorts of books to make you laugh, allowing those wallflowers preferring their own company to just sit and read, with a fine spirit in hand, of course. Cocktails are a specialty here, but that said, Polit Bar offers an ever expanding whisky and gin collection, and a selection of luxe champagnes if you feel like celebrating. Décor leans toward the glamorous, with gold chains and chandeliers adding a little sparkle to the art deco theme, and deep booths add a cosy and discreet touch. Food is available all night, and staff are happy to cook up some delicious bar classics until the early morning hours.
