BrodDogs

| Editor

Sascha Brodbeck and partner Joelle Bou-Jaoude started doing their thing out of a little red food van on the shores Lake Burley Griffin five years ago. The success of that venture led to a fully fledged bricks and mortar location at Canberra Glassworks, cementing them in the landscape of Canberra’s food scene, but leaving them wondering what to do with the van. After much deliberating, it was decided to give the old thing a full refurb and do for hot dogs what they had previously done for hamburgers. Enter BrodDogs. Pimped up in shiny red, with sick wheels and hipster decals, it now sits at the front of The Hamlet–perhaps the hippest of hip things on hip Lonsdale Street–serving up an array of hot dog creations to the ever-increasing crowd of appreciative locals. Familiar sounding names like New Yorker, Chilli Dog and Aussie Sizzle typify the menu items, and hand-made franks come in a number of varieties, including a pork free version. Ingredients are decidedly un-food-van-like with sweet potato ribbons and gruyere cheese typical. Of course, classic sauces, mustards and relishes help keep it real; and a vegetarian version bypasses the ‘fake sausage’ trap, being stuffed instead with all the tasty ‘vego’ accompaniments.
