Zlatno Dessertz is a new dessert delivery business that combines traditional European sweets with a modern twist.
Chantel Bulakovski studied business at university but has always had a passion for food, especially the traditional sweets baked by her grandmother, so she decided to combine these interests to create Zlatno Dessertz.
“I grew up around food and was taught by my mother and my grandmother. After I graduated, I realised the best way to understand business was to start one myself, so desserts were a perfect fit,” Chantel told Region.

Zlatno – which is Macedonian for gold – was inspired by Chantel’s family, who immigrated to Australia from Macedonia. Since then, they’ve maintained the traditions and recipes from their Macedonian village. Chantel explained that this part of Europe is well known for various foods, including sweet and savoury baked goods.
“I generally describe my sweets as European because there’s lots of variation in the kinds of foods you see across the whole Balkan region, and it’s hard to say which dish came from which country exactly,” she said.

Some of Chantel’s recipes are pretty close to how her grandmother would have made them, but there are plenty that she has made her own. She wants to share her history through food anchored in traditional European recipes with a modern and innovative twist to make them inclusive and reach a diverse audience (many of her treats are vegan and halal-friendly).
One example is her signature Zlatni Puffs which were an accidental creation. While testing out a new recipe, she made a mistake but decided that the result had potential and kept working on it until an entirely new dish was born!

Another way Chantel is innovating her business is through home deliveries. Rather than purchasing from a shop front, customers order boxes of sweets online and have them delivered to their home or workplace. Chantel said she wanted to diversify how Canberrans access food.
We ordered the Ultimate Mini Dessertz Box, which comes with oblandi wafers, a sweet maznik scroll, walnut keska cakes, baklava and coconut balls skewered on a sweet kebab, biscotti and Chantel’s Zlatni puffs.
My favourite is the fluffy walnut keska cake. It’s a little less sweet than the syrupy Zlatni puffs or sugary biscotti but is the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee. Other colleagues preferred the Nutella-stuffed maznik scroll.

Chantel hopes that her success as a young woman in business will inspire others to think outside the box and create businesses of their own. She’s also excited to share a few new tasty treats currently in development as she grows the business further.
